CourseDeveloping Responsible AI Solutions

Ethics play a major role in AI systems. Since AI systems make decisions and the development process is sensitive to bias – ethics is crucial to creating responsible AI solutions.

The standard ISO/IEC/IEEE 24748-7000 lays the foundations for this.

This course teaches how to use integration of ethics and social values in your development process for AI solutions and IT systems using “Value based engineering” (VBE) – an implementation of the international standard ISO/IEC/IEEE 24748-7000.

This course enables you to apply VBE to your development project and lays a foundation for becoming a Value Lead for ethics in product development

The advantages of AI ethics using ISO/IEEE 24748-7000

  • Take ethical aspects into account when designing your AI solutions. This will help you avoid late changes
  • Involve stakeholders at an early stage. New technology raises concerns that are better addressed proactively by engaging in dialog.
  • Use a method developed by practitioners that integrates seamlessly into your existing processes
  • Be ready for the upcoming EU AI Act

Course agenda

We will cover the three phases of developing ethical AI solutions.

1. SOI and context exploration

  • Analyze your System-of-Interest and the context it is used in.
  • Scrutinize 3rd party dependencies (system-of-systems)
  • Create comprehensive documentation.

2. Ethics elicitation

  • Engage with stakeholders directly or indirectly impacted by your planned system.
  • List values affected by involving well defined ethical theories.
  • Aggregate and prioritize core-values impacted.

3. Ethically aligned design

  • Derive Ethical Value Requirements (EVRs) for your technology and your organization
  • Analyse Risks based on EVRs and define measures to control them
  • Consider Certification with respect to your process or your IT system, e.g. with IEEE CertifAIEd.
